One of the best ways we can learn to avoid dangerous situations is by reviewing accidents.  In this series, I will share some aviation-related accidents that I find can help us learn to become better aviators!

The first accident occurred yesterday, May 1st, and involved a 747 military transport aircraft.  Although I will rarely share accidents that have not yet been fully investigated by the NTSB, as we can most often learn better from their findings, this accident is one that involves a very powerful aircraft stalling.  It underscores the important concepts we learn about AIRSPEED, ALTITUDE, and WEIGHT and BALANCE.

Please remember the critical (life and death) importance of peroperly calculating weight and balance for each flight, making sure your airspeed is appropriate for each phase of flight (especially at slow airspeeds close to the ground such as on takeoff and landing), and be very aware of your altitude at all times.

A tragic accident like this is rare, but when it occurs it is often startling.  If you are my student, I know that you will take care to always fly safe!
